Why Cats Should Never Be Curious About Plastic Bags

This is an incredibly epic video. At first you’re as curious as he is about the plastic bag and then the last few minutes is just a frenzy. I laughed out aloud when he fell to the ground but really didn’t expect that whizz around the living room like his tail was on fire.

Definitely worth the watch!

Make sure you get your pet kitties pet insurance just in case it ever comes across a plastic bag and hurts itself trying to run away from it. Check out our pet insurance page at 1300 insurance to get the best deals on pet insurance!

Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade in NYC

Who knew such an event existed? The annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is apparently a tradition in New York City as the parade was held for the 20th time over the weekend!

The parade showcases dogs and their owners dressing up to win prizes given for “best dressed” throughout the day. Interesting choices of costumes, I must say, very creative ideas indeed.

Winners included a dog dressed up as Lady Gaga in the meat costume, a tribute to Gaga’s entrance at the Golden Globe earlier this year. This little puppy has now put a new spin on the usual ‘hot dog’ joke.

However, the top winner of the day is this little Corgi who was dressed up as a bus. But what’s better is that the owner dressed up as the bus stop…a perfect duo combo the judges couldn’t resist. Too bad there are no photos of the owner but here’s the little puppy who now has street cred over his other puppy friends.

Have the photos given you ideas for dressing up your own puppies? You gotta love New Yorkers and the crazy ideas they come up with! Maybe this Halloween we should start dressing up our dogs as well? Room for thought Australia!

Baillieu says No! to puppy farms

The Baillieu government has announced to take action on rogue puppy farms which has been a controversial issue as of late. Baillieu plans to set down tough new laws which will see puppy farm owners being fined up to $30,000 and banned from owning animals for up to 10 years as reported by the Herald Sun.

The law will only apply to breeders of dogs as they are known to discard puppies at six months of age. The Victorian government is against animal cruelty and supports the protection of animals, especially dogs, from abuse and neglect.

If you are intending to buy a puppy, ensure that your seller is legitimate and are not practicing animal cruelty. Report abusive practices of animals to your local council and help protect Victoria from harboring illegal puppy farms. Dogs in puppy farms are caged, fed only at a bare minimum and are treated with little care and love. Help save our puppies!

The worst pet nightmare

There was a major event involving our two Pomeranians at the household this week. It made me scream, squeal and jump up on my chair. It was so bad that I had a nightmare about it last night, although the dream wasn’t particularly related to the actual real live event.

It started at 9 pm yesterday night when I heard the usual occasional bark from my two dogs outside. They were growling quite noticeably but I was too engrossed in my TV show to take any particular action. They always bark and growl outside so I thought they were just playing with each other or was chasing after a bird.

About ten minutes later, they both ran in panting excitedly and that was when I thought something peculiar was up. It’s night time with no birds in sight, and they weren’t ‘chasing’ anything yet they were excitedly panting like they’d just finish a marathon. Kiko, the female pomeranian, ran back out followed by Kenji and when they pranced back in, it looked like they were gnawing at something.

The object had them both facing the ground and occupied and I did a poke on Kiko and then she revealed what the object was. IT WAS A RAT!

I screamed my lungs out and jumped on the couch and yelled for my brother. They killed a rat and then brought it into the house! Talk about untrained dogs. Disgusting! I couldn’t even look at the rat, it was quite disfigured and there was blood and falling hair. I’m getting sick at the just the thought of it.

So this little debacle ended up in my dreams last night. I had a nightmare that all the dogs in my neighbourhood ran wild and took over our whole street. Yup, nothing to do with the rat, just the nightmare of domestic pet chaos!

Travel Destination #8: The African Safari – The Freedom of the Animal Kingdom

Travel Destination #8: South African Desert

Count yourself lucky if you ever have the chance to go on the African Safari. There is something incredible about going back to nature. The thousand year old trees with the wind sifting beneath every hair on your body, travelling in a green camouflage jeep along the uneven road and just admiring the beauty of the land we live in.

Some may gawk at the idea of a back to nature holiday but the African Safari is not your usual off the beaten track trip. You get to see hippopotamus in their natural habitats and baby elephants fresh from his mother’s womb, giraffes, herds of zebras running across wild plains and lions proving to you why they’re named King of the Jungle.

As a kid, I visited the zoo quite regularly, loved the animals and watching them at feeding hour. But as a grown up, going to the zoo is like entirely new field trip on its own. I am seriously in awe of seeing real live animals, after being stuck day to day in four by four buildings; ironically there is a certain kind of freedom in watching these animals just do their thing.

But I would imagine the African Safari to be nothing like my local zoo. For one, the animals in the Safari are literally free and roam about as they like. We are almost capturing a candid snapshot of them and that is a beauty that no words can express. The safari is one of my dream adventure holidays and a summer travel plan that got unexpectedly cancelled recently. After months of daydreaming of the African plains, researching the best South African beaches… my days now feel hopeless as I squander my eyes back to the poster of the African Safari hanging on my wall.

If I were going to South Africa for my summer though, I would definitely buy myself some travel insurance. The health benefits is one thing, as I know a couple of days roaming the plains I will no longer be as fit as a cheetah due to my deficient travelling immune system. Cities in South Africa also don’t have the lowest crime rates so a protection over my belongings will save me putting the padlock on my purse.

RIP Steve Jobs founder of Apple.Inc dies at 56 today

Steve Jobs Tribute - Source: www.apple.com

What a big loss to our society! A great mind, innovative thinker and wonderful entrepreneur. Steve Jobs has made history when he changed the way we think and use technology. Through his clever inventions and unique design aesthetics, Steve had changed the world.

To many he might just be that guy in the black turtle neck holding the latest Apple gadget but to his loyal fan base, he is a hero. It is apparent that so many around the world are disheartened by Steve’s departure as social media outlets, from Facebook to Twitter, are bursting with updates of the news first released on abcnews.com. Many thought it was a hoax, but the official Apple.com tribute of Steve’s photo on their homepage proves otherwise.

Jobs resigned as Apple CEO about a month ago due to failing health, but his death is very unexpected to the public eye with many still shocked at the news.

This legendary inventor has revolutionalized the technology world, from the mobile phone to the mp3 player. He had a knack for taking an ordinary idea that was already in the market and turning it into something more extraordinary.

Steve is a symbol of someone who rose from his failures and epitomizes every cliche about picking yourself up after every fall. He had reached every rock bottom probably more than a few times but with every setback, he seemed to be able to fly higher and become greater than before. Jobs had been kicked out of the very company he co-founded only to find two more, namely NeXT computers and Pixar Animation Studios.

A brilliant visionary, a charismatic leader but most of all a wonderful person. The technology world will never be the same again, we have all been touched by Steve’s brilliance in one way or another. If not only by the gadgets he created, but by the sheer motivation and true inspiration that Steve has become in our society.

You will be missed Steve, Rest In Peace.

David Beckham and Pets

The pets of famous stars are probably as famous as the owners themselves. It’s a case of like owner, like pet and there is no one more famous than David Beckham. Beckham also has a share of his pet peeves: his two dogs, a bulldog named Coco and another dog of unknown breed named Scarlett.

Coco and Scarlett perhaps hasn’t received as much spot light as their owners which could be a good thing for them. Who likes to be watched on their morning walk or their monthly trip to the vet?

It’s hard to be a pet of a famous person being wagoned around to movie sets and having weekly trips to the groomers. Always looking pretty.. when all a dog’s want is to be scruffy and play around in mud. You can’t expect anything less from the pets of designer Victoria Beckham.

There is no doubt that other than always being super fancy, the Beckham pets would be well insured just in case anything happens. We wouldn’t want a chipped nail to make the headlines of a magazine would we?

So maybe we can’t get our pets weekly trips to the groomers but we can get them some pet insurance…they start off as cheap as 28 cents! But then again there’s no price for being super fancy.

Visit our Pet Insurance Page for more information on how to make your pets super fancy with pet insurance without it robbing your bank account!

The flight of the comfort zone

I don’t know how much urge other people have for their need to travel. For me, it seems like I have this undying desire to constantly move. There’s a unique thrill to travelling, especially to places you’ve never been to before. The excitement of the plane trip up to the learning of a new language.

When you touch down on a new city, there’s a definite different feel to home. Different air breathing in, different people making you coffee and there’s even a different shade of green on the leaves. Everything feels different and this is what my travelling addiction thrives on; The flight of the comfort zone.

Travelling means leaving everything you know behind and opening your mind to discover the unknown. There’s a saying that you don’t know what you don’t know, and I believe that it cannot be more true than in travelling. The taste of new foods will reset your tasting palette exposing you to flavours you never knew existed. The frivolous smell of a city, even if the smell is of a dark alley way filled with garbage. The buildings, the roads, the public transport… all ready for you to explore.

It doesn’t take long for me to get sick of home. The routine and the always knowing of what’s going to happen in the next hour. Travelling means you’re in an entirely new place, not knowing anything, not even the train timetables. I hate the fact that I know what time my train leaves the station every afternoon and which bus always comes at precisely 5 minutes later than its scheduled time.

Travelling frees you from all that. Frees you from the routine, from the knowing and throws you into places, people or things that you don’t know about. It’s about exploration and adventure. Sometimes it’s good to be home again, but for now, please help me get out of here!

If this post hasn’t inspired you to pack your bags and get on a plane somewhere then go to our Facebook page to savour your eyes on some gorgeous photos from around the world. Places that will surely get you giddy on a Friday afternoon and will make you rethink about spending your summer holidays here at home. Have you registered your Pit Bull Terrier ?

Do you own a Pit Bull Terrier? Or do you own a Pit Bull cross breed? Have you registered them to your local council?

There is a new Victorian law put in place that all Pit Bull Terriers must be registered before the 29th September 2011. The consequence for not registering is immediate seizure and then they will be put down.

A bit severe of a punishment in my opinion. How dangerous can these cute little things be?

Pit Bull Terriers are considered to be a high risk dog breed and are more likely to attack humans and other animals than other dog breeds. Although they show no signs of aggression, they pose a risk to community safety. This new registration law will also entail owners to muzzle their beloved pet and put them on a leash while outside or in any public area.

If community safety isn’t motivation enough for you to register your dog, then perhaps the hefty $2500 penalty fine for failing to register might get you to call your council ASAP.

For Pit Bull owners who do not wish to register can surrender their dog to the local council where they will be put down or contact their veterinarian for further assistance on euthanasia .

Poor Pit Bulls! They have never attacked anyone yet they have been labelled as a restricted dog breed. When you register your Pit Bull to your local council, also consider getting them some Pet Insurance. Visit our Pet Insurance Page for more information!

Also check out this website from the Victorian government for more information regarding Pit Bull registrations:
